Portugal defeated Liechtenstein (4-0) and their captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who broke the record of matches played with a national team by reaching 197, scored a brace, this Thursday in Lisbon in the start of the qualification for the 2024 Eurocup in Germany.
CR7 scored from the penalty spot (51) and from a direct free kick (63) to complete a thrashing that had been opened by Joao Cancelo (8) and Bernardo Silva (47).
The 38-year-old forward, now at Saudi club Al-Nassr, played his 197th international match and surpasses the Kuwaiti Bader Al-Mutawa, with whom he shared the record.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner also holds the record for goals in a national team since September 1, 2021 when he scored a brace against Ireland and surpassed Iranian Ali Daei and his 109 goals. With his brace this Thursday, he totals 120.
Portugal started their new era with a comfortable victory, with Spanish coach Roberto Martínez at the helm, replacing Fernando Santos, who was dismissed after the World Cup in Qatar where the Portuguese team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Morocco (1-0), a tournament in which CR7 finished as a substitute and at odds with the coach.
