With a penalty goal, Venezuela defeated Chile 1-0 on Saturday and qualified for the final hexagonal round of the South American U-20 Championship in Colombia.
Just like last time, Brayan Alcocer scored the only goal for 'La Vinotinto' from the penalty spot (48th minute), which came from behind in Group B and now joins Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia, Uruguay, and Ecuador in the fight for four spots in the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
The penalty came after a strange play at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali: Chilean defender Yahir Salazar threw himself to the ground to clear a cross with his head, but ended up touching the ball with his hand.
In a direct duel for a spot in the second phase, Chile missed out on the tournament.
Under the guidance of Argentine Fabricio Coloccini, the Venezuelans lost their first two games against Bolivia (0-1) and Uruguay (0-3), but they recovered ground and finished in second place in the group with 6 points.
Uruguay (10 points) qualified as the leader of the group and Ecuador (5) secured the final spot.
The final phase will be held in Bogota from January 31 to February 12, with a round-robin format. The hexagonal also awards three tickets to the Pan American Games in Santiago.

WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE SOUTH AMERICAN U-20 CHAMPIONSHIP?
All matches of the South American U-20 Championship are played in the host nation, and the ten U-20 national teams from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) participate in each edition (unless an association withdraws). The teams are divided into two groups of five, where they play against each other once, meaning each team plays four matches.
The top three teams from each group in the South American U-20 Championship qualify for a final round of six teams, where they also play against each other once, meaning each team plays five matches. The results of this final round determine the champion and the South American qualification for the next U-20 World Cup, and in some editions, for the Olympic Football Tournament or the Pan American Football Tournament.
Unlike most international competitions, the South American U-20 Championship does not have a final match, a third-place match, or direct elimination stages between teams. In case of a tie in points between teams in either of the two rounds, the qualification is determined following the following system:

- Number of goals scored.
