"With sadness the passing of a man who, through soccer, brought the name of Brazil to the world. He turned soccer into art and joy," he wrote on his social media, accompanied by a photograph of the Brazilian star.

Brazil declares three days of official mourning for Pelé's death
The government of Brazil declared three days of official mourning for the death of former football player Edson Arantes de Nascimento, Pelé, in Sao Paulo.
The mourning will take effect this Thursday and will end on December 31, the eve of the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
