Wout Weghorst and Lionel Messi gave us one of the most memorable scenes of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The Dutch forward relived what happened with the Argentine in the quarter-finals.

The "What are you looking at, dummy? Go away, dummy" will be one of the most memorable phrases of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, not only because it was said by Lionel Messi, but also because of the context in which it occurred. Wout Weghorst, the second protagonist of this scene, was portrayed and will never forget being insulted by the greatest football player in history.

After Argentina's victory over the Netherlands, the atmosphere was heated and 'Leo' showed his most confrontational side, the side that doesn't put up with any nonsense. Weeks later, the forward of the 'Clockwork Orange' revived the incident with Messi and acknowledged that it earned him recognition from the Argentine.

"I wanted to pay my respects to him after the match, but he wasn't willing. Well, I take it as a nice compliment that he now knows my name. It means I did something right," Weghorst said in an interview with the media after his most recent match with Besiktas in the Turkish Cup.

Although many thought that after that altercation the Dutchman had a negative opinion of Messi, the opposite happened. Wout Weghorst acknowledged that it was a tough match they had in the quarter-finals of the World Cup and considered that 'Leo' is one of the best in the history of football.

"I fought against Messi and there were some moments between us. I think we surprised them. But I have a lot of respect for him. He is the best, or one of the best players in history," added the forward who belongs to Burnley but is on loan to Besiktas.

"Of course, I am still disappointed and still thinking: what if...? There were only two games left. That question will always haunt me, but I am grateful to have been able to experience a World Cup. These have been the three best weeks of my career," added the 30-year-old Dutchman.

What will Messi's future be at PSG?

The contract of Lionel Messi at Paris Saint Germain ends in June 2023 and as of this month of January, he could negotiate with any other club if he wishes. However, the Parisian team hopes to retain him for at least one more season.

Thus, it has been reported from France that the negotiations are underway and 'Leo' would be close to accepting an extension of his contract until June 2024. For now, the team led by Christophe Galtier is focused on winning the Champions League, a tournament for which they decided to bring together Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Neymar in the attack.
