The defender and champion of America in 2011 has become the oldest player from Uruguay to play in a World Cup. He achieved this milestone by surpassing Obdulio Varela, who had achieved it at the same age of 36 years, but with a 5-month difference.

Lionel Messi is still far from this record, as despite being 35 years old and one of the most experienced players of the 'Albiceleste', he is still behind Ángel Labruna. Labruna played his last World Cup in Sweden 1958 at the age of 40.
Cristiano Ronaldo is also not the oldest Portuguese player to participate in the World Cup, as the record was previously held by Carvalho.
