The World Cup is showing great level and setting historic records game after game. This time, the appointment with transcendence has arrived for Diego Godín, player of the Uruguay National Team, who has broken a record that not even Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo have reached.

Uruguay drew 0-0 against South Korea in their first match at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The defender and champion of America in 2011 has become the oldest player from Uruguay to play in a World Cup. He achieved this milestone by surpassing Obdulio Varela, who had achieved it at the same age of 36 years, but with a 5-month difference.

Lionel Messi is still far from this record, as despite being 35 years old and one of the most experienced players of the 'Albiceleste', he is still behind Ángel Labruna. Labruna played his last World Cup in Sweden 1958 at the age of 40.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also not the oldest Portuguese player to participate in the World Cup, as the record was previously held by Carvalho.

Concern in Uruguay due to the draw against South Korea

Despite not having lost their first match like the Argentine national team, Uruguay has caused concern as prior to their debut they were one of the favorites to top their group. Unfortunately, there are criticisms towards coach Diego Alonso for preferring to start Luis Suárez instead of Edinson Cavani and Darwin Núñez, who currently have a better present in European football.
