On the second-to-last day of group stage action in the UEFA Nations League, Group A3 will be the focus on Monday, as the big powers in the Group of Death take to the pitch in Matchday 6.

HUNGARY vs. ITALY

Group A3

This match will determine who represents the group in the semifinals in the next calendar year.

Hungary comes in with the edge, holding 10 points after five matches. They started strong in the opening window, going 2-1-1 with a pair of victories over the lackluster England squad. Then, in their return to action on Friday, the Hungarian side squeezed out a 1-0 win over Germany to keep their lead at the top of the group. Through their five contests, Hungary has scored eight goals, granted four of them came in their second victory over the Three Lions.

The Italians were able to keep pace with Hungary, as they also picked up a 1-0 victory on Friday, taking down England, sending them to relegation. The loss to Germany in the final match of the opening window definitely hurt their standings, as they trail Hungary by two points coming into the final matchday of the group stage.

Italy is looking to make it to the semifinals for the second time in the Nations League. In order to do so, they would need to win, outright, on Monday, as Hungary moves on if they win or draw.

Along with a 2-1 win in their first meeting of the season, Italy has handled the Hungarian squad historically, going 17-8-9 all-time.

ENGLAND vs. GERMANY

Group A3

As mentioned previously, England is already going to be relegated to League B for the 2024-25 season. Meaning this match is more of a FIFA World Cup tune up, and a battle for national pride, than Nations League competition.

Germany is one of two countries to have to yet win a match through five contests in the UNL. They have one more point more than Wales, thanks to draws against Germany and Italy. However, they have only found the back of the net once thus far.

Despite having glimpses of their ability to be a strong team, a loss to Hungary and the inability to finish leading to three draws gives Germany, at-best, a shot at a second-place finish.

This will be the 35th all-time meeting between the two powerhouses. Along with their 1-1 draw back in June, Germany is 15-14-5 against the Three Lions dating back to their first meeting back in 1930.
