When is the Champions League 2022/23 draw?
On Thursday, August 25th in Turkey, the draw for the Champions League groups will take place. There are 26 teams qualified automatically and six winners from the playoff round, which will be confirmed on August 23rd and 24th.
Champions League format
As it is known, the top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16. Meanwhile, the third-placed teams from each group advance to the knockout stage of the UEFA Europa League, where they will face the second-placed teams from the UEFA Europa League groups in search of a spot in the round of 16.
How does the Champions League draw work?
- The draw consists of 32 teams: 26 teams with direct access to the group stage and the six winners from the playoffs.
- The 32 teams will be divided into four pots of seeded teams. Pot 1 will consist of the champion, the winner of the UEFA Europa League, and the champions of the six highest-ranking countries that have not qualified through one of the 2021/22 titles; Pots 2 to 4 will be determined by the club coefficient rankings.
- In the case of federations with two representatives, the clubs will be paired to distribute their matches between Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In the case of federations with four representatives, two pairings will be made. These will be made based on television audiences.
- No team can play against a team from its own federation. Any other restrictions will be announced prior to the draw.
