This Saturday, June 25th, from 6pm, the Red Bull Miraflores Cerro Abajo will take place. This first edition of the competition will be held throughout Bajada Balta, in the heart of Miraflores.
The Red Bull Cerro Abajo circuit is a downhill cycling competition that takes place in the city instead of the mountains, countryside, or forest. It started 18 years ago in Valparaiso, Chile, a port town declared a World Heritage Site. 10 years later, Monserrate in Bogota joined the series, becoming the longest urban trail in the world with its 2.4km route (Guinness record). This year, Miraflores is added to the South American series.
Red Bull Miraflores Cerro Abajo will have a completely new route for all riders, through the emblematic Bajada Balta, known for its stone cobblestones. Along the 1.2-kilometer route, a total of 15 different obstacles will be installed, including a jump of 1.6m in height over the recently launched Ford All New Maverick pick-up truck. Also, a curve with a jump over the Rappi embankment and a ramp with a jump of no less than 12 meters in length and 2 meters in height.
Our National Downhill Champion and former Pan American champion, Sebastian Alfaro, is the only Peruvian who has previously participated in Red Bull Cerro Abajo in Monserrate and Valparaiso, achieving excellent results. This year, he placed within the Top 10, being eighth in Colombia and ninth in Chile.
Other Peruvian participants include Alejandro Paz, Diego Sarmiento, Christian Escobar, Aíssa Hamann, Janine Costa, among others. Out of the total of 30 competitors, 6 are foreigners from the Czech Republic, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, and Costa Rica. Among the foreigners, Tomas Slavik from the Czech Republic, a two-time gold medalist in the World Championship, and Pedro Ferreira from Chile, two-time champion of Red Bull Valparaiso Cerro Abajo, stand out.
The action will begin from 4pm with training and at 6.30pm with qualifiers, where the top 10 times will advance to the grand final, which starts at 7.30pm.
