After the Chilean national team failed to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, the tenure of coach Martín Lasarte was untenable for the Chilean National Professional Football Association (ANFP) and the dissatisfied fans of La Roja.
That's how it happened, the Uruguayan coach stopped leading the Chilean team and on Monday he had his farewell with a press conference, where he made some statements that went unnoticed.
"A year ago, I said that the Chilean national team, to qualify, still depends on their golden generation. Chilean football doesn't have outstanding players other than them. There are very few, and some that have emerged don't even compete, play, or get called up," Lasarte said.

"There is no need to hide, we must see reality. Some players competed, like Marcelino Nuñez and Montecinos, who is not young anymore, but they were never given the opportunity, we gave it to them," said the now former coach of Chile.
As you may remember, La Roja reached the final matchday of the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers with a small chance to qualify, where they had to win and hope that Colombia and Peru would fail. However, none of these scenarios occurred: Uruguay defeated Chile, the Tricolor did the same with Venezuela, and the Blanquirroja defeated Paraguay and secured their place in the playoffs.
'Machete' joined the Chilean national team on February 10, 2021, and overall, he achieved six victories, nine defeats, and six draws. Although, in the qualifying process, he had four wins, three draws, and seven losses.
