University of Chile Confirms Departure of Esteban Valencia and Appoints Cristian Romero as Interim Manager
The University of Chile confirmed this Sunday that Esteban Valencia has resigned as coach of the first team following the team's defeat on Saturday in Rancagua, losing 1-2 against Curico Unido, making it the eighth consecutive match without a win for the team.
"The Club and all those who are part of the institution deeply appreciate Esteban for taking on this challenge in a complex moment and for the hard work he and his coaching staff have put in, with a lot of personal sacrifice and dedication. Thank you for everything, Esteban!" the club stated in a press release.
In addition, the university clarified that Cristian "Relojito" Romero will temporarily replace "Huevito" as the head coach of the team. Romero was previously working with the team's youth divisions.
Incidents in Rancagua
The team also addressed the invasion of the blue fans onto the pitch at Estadio El Teniente after the defeat to Curico, during which some players were even confronted and assaulted.
In response to this, the club's management was decisive: "The Club strongly repudiates and condemns these acts of violence, which are completely unacceptable and intolerable," they stated.
"The Club will take all necessary actions against those responsible for these acts," they added.
