Hernán Crespo leaves Sao Paulo
Bad results led to the departure of Hernán Crespo from the São Paulo team
Hernán Crespo left the technical direction of Sao Paulo this Wednesday, after a series of bad results and a performance below expectations in the Brasileirao.
"The decision was made by mutual agreement after a conversation between the coach and the board", stated the Sao Paulo team in a statement, in which they thanked the coach and his coaching staff.
"Immediately, the club will initiate a process in the market to search for a new coach", added the bulletin.
Crespo, 46, took over as coach of Sao Paulo in February after winning the 2020 Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana with the modest Defensa y Justicia from Argentina.
The Tricolors won the Campeonato Paulista in May by defeating Palmeiras in the final, a trophy they hadn't won since 2005 and that ended an eight-year title drought.
The triumph against a fierce rival and the commitment to offensive football propelled the coach, but support waned due to a weak start in the Brasileirao, even reaching the relegation zone, and early eliminations in the Libertadores (quarterfinals against Palmeiras) and Copa do Brasil (quarterfinals against Fortaleza).
Although they improved in the Brazilian championship as the matches went on, São Paulo is currently in 13th position, just three points above the relegation zone, with 12 rounds remaining in the tournament. The team is also on a streak of five consecutive draws.
