The captain of Borussia Dortmund Marco Reus has ruled himself out of being part of the German team that will participate in the upcoming Eurocup (June 11 to July 11).
Reus' absence adds to that of Barcelona goalkeeper Marc André Ter Stegen, who announced on Monday that he will be absent to recover from an injury.
German coach Joachim Löw plans to announce the list of 26 players called up for the European tournament on Wednesday, in which Germany will play in the group stage against France, Portugal, and Hungary.
"After a complicated, exhausting and finally -thank God- successful season, I have decided, together with the national coach, not to go to the Eurocup," wrote Reus, 31, in a message posted on Instagram.
The forward had shown great form in recent weeks, helping Dortmund secure qualification for the next Champions League and winning the German Cup last week.
Injuries had already prevented Reus from being part of the team that won the 2014 World Cup and participated in the 2016 Eurocup.
Reus has played 44 matches with the national team, scoring 13 goals, since making his debut in October 2011.
His last match with the national team was in October 2019.
