Fabio Capello had declared in La Gazzetta dello Sport that Ronaldo had been a great player but a negative leader for the group. "We sold him in January and the atmosphere in the team completely changed and we turned around the nine-point advantage that Barcelona had," commented the coach on the championship they won in the 2006/07 season.

In response to those comments, the Brazilian star said: "He was a great coach in the 90s, but in his time at Real Madrid he was already outdated and no longer motivated. So much so that after that year, he had no more success in the places he went to."
