Fortuna defeat allows Werder Bremen to avoid direct relegation
The defeat of Fortuna allowed Werder Bremen, who beat Cologne 6-1, to avoid direct relegation and now they will have to fight for their permanence against the third team from the second Bundesliga, which will be decided this Sunday and could be Hamburg or Heidenheim.
The provisional salvation of Bremen was perhaps the most remarkable thing on a matchday where there were few things at stake. Bremen depended on Fortuna's failure, believed in it, and did their homework so that even a draw from their competitor would have been enough for them.
Despite being on the decline for several seasons and having come dangerously close to the abyss, Bremen is still the third team in the so-called "eternal classification" of the Bundesliga, below Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.
Gladbach, in order to qualify for the Champions League, depended on themselves and did their homework by defeating Hertha, so Bayer Leverkusen's 1-0 victory over Mainz was useless.
Bayer Leverkusen will now have to settle for playing in the Europa League, which Hoffenheim also qualified for directly with a surprising 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund, who had already secured second place and had nothing to play for.
Bayern, already champions, also had nothing to play for but beat Wolfsburg 4-0 with goals from Kingsley Coman, Michaël Cuisance, Robert Lewandowski from a penalty, and Thomas Müller.
Bayern thus completed 99 goals and fell two short of their historic record in a season. Robert Lewandowski was crowned top scorer of the tournament with 33 goals.
At the end of the match, they received the championship trophy in a strange ceremony, with just 100 people in the stadium and no beer showers.
"This end of the season was not what we would have wanted, but it was the only one possible. And it was possible thanks to the discipline of everyone and we also have a champion," said Christian Seifert, CEO of the German Football League (DFL), before handing over the trophy to Bayern captain Manuel Neuer.
In the other matches, there was nothing at stake. Eintracht Frankfurt defeated last-placed Paderborn, who had already been relegated, 3-2. Freiburg beat Schalke 4-0 and RB Leipzig defeated Augsburg 2-1, with two goals from Timo Werner, who played his last match with the East German team before moving to Chelsea.
