Note on Premier League Match - Chelsea vs Manchester City
Jürgen Klopp's team needed City not to win to lift the Premier without playing, and a Chelsea in need of points to secure a place in the Champions League took advantage of the counterattacks.
A stunning goal from Christian Pulisic and a penalty converted by Willian sent the Premier League title to Anfield, where the champagne is already being popped.
City, which did not hold back despite Guardiola downplaying the match, went out to drown Chelsea but ended up strolling around the front of the area without apparent danger. The first scare for Kepa came from a set piece, when a header from Fernandinho forced the goalkeeper to make a great save to repel the ball.
Chelsea wanted to take advantage of speed and the wings to create danger, and whenever they found space on the sides, they had chances. And the goal came on the counterattack. Benjamin Mendy got tangled up in a corner clearance when he was the one closing down the possible counter and gifted the ball to Pulisic, who broke through with speed and delicately finished past Ederson.
Chelsea held onto the lead until the second half when City once again caused damage from a set piece. In a foul committed by Kanté on Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne equalized. The Belgian took the ball and with a magnificent strike, placed it in the top corner beyond the reach of Kepa.
Victory seemed close for Pep's team, which grew in the match with the introduction of players like David Silva, but once again Chelsea killed them on the counter. First, Pulisic dribbled past Ederson in a race to goal, and with an open net, his shot was cleared off the line at the last moment. There was no forgiveness on the second attempt.
In an absurd play, Fernandinho prevented Tammy Abraham's goal once again on the goal line with his hand. At first, neither the referee nor the linesman saw anything, but the VAR corrected the referee. Fernandinho was sent off and Willian made it 2-1 from the penalty spot, gifting Liverpool their first Premier League title since 1990.
The Celestes can no longer catch up with Liverpool in the league. The Reds are 23 points ahead of City with seven matchdays remaining and 21 points at stake.
Liverpool succeeds Guardiola's team as champion, after falling just two points short last year. It is Liverpool's 19th league title, leaving them just one title behind the record of Manchester United. The big celebrations will have to wait, but thirty years later, it can finally be said that Liverpool is the champion of the English Premier League.
