Four other Bundesliga teams kneeled before their matches this Sunday, on a day Werder Bremen edged closer to relegation and Schalke's winless streak became the worst it has suffered in 27 years.
Borussia Dortmund and Hertha Berlin were the first to kneel on the grass before their match on Saturday, in a gesture against racism following the massive protests in the United States over the death of George Floyd, a black man who was handcuffed, in Minneapolis on May 25.
Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen followed suit on Sunday. Union Berlin and Schalke - whose American midfielder Weston McKennie was the first player in Germany to protest last week - also kneeled before the 1-1 draw they signed on Sunday. The referee and his assistants joined in.
