German international Timo Werner is close to signing with Chelsea for the upcoming season, according to reports from the sports magazine "Kicker."

Contract Clause Allows Timo Werner to Leave RB Leipzig

Timo Werner's contract with RB Leipzig has a release clause that would allow him to leave the club for a fee of around 50 million euros.

However, this clause must be executed before June 15.

According to "Kicker," Chelsea appears willing to pay that amount unlike other interested clubs such as Liverpool.

Werner joined Leipzig in 2016 from Vfb Stuttgart, which had just been relegated, and his signing cost the East German club 14 million euros.

During his time at Leipzig, Werner has played 154 official matches, scoring 92 goals and providing 39 assists.

After a failed transfer to Bayern Munich, which would have cost the Bavarian club 25 million euros, Werner renewed his contract with Leipzig at the end of the previous season.

If the deal goes through, Werner would become the second most expensive sale in Leipzig's history, behind Naby Keita, who Liverpool paid 68 million euros for in 2018.

Since their promotion to the top tier of German football, Leipzig has spent close to 250 million euros on transfers and earned 160 million euros from player sales.

These figures explain why Sporting Director Oliver Mintzlaf has stated that it is important for the club's development, from a financial fair play perspective, to receive transfer funds this summer.

Another player who could leave is defender Dayot Upamecano, who arrived at the club in 2017 for around 10 million euros and has a release clause of 60 million euros that would enable him to leave in the summer.
