The stars of Paris Saint-Germain are willing to reduce their salary by 50% to compensate for the consequences of the coronavirus, within the global agreement being finalized by the Professional Football League and the players' union, reveals the newspaper "Le Parisien" on Thursday.
This 50% salary cut would affect those with higher salaries, while the rest of the squad would have a slightly lower reduction.
The agreement that the LFP and the players are about to announce allows each player to accept or reject the salary cut, but prevents clubs from imposing it above the agreed limits.
According to "Le Parisien", the PSG stars agree with what has been agreed, which sets an example for the rest, as the capital club has by far the highest-paid squad in the French championship.
The 50% salary reduction applies to players earning more than 100,000 euros per month, around fifty in the entire French championship, the majority of them playing for the French champions.
Salary Scale
Those who earn between 50,000 and 100,000 euros per month may see their salary reduced by a maximum of 40%, and up to 30% for those earning between 20,000 and 50,000 euros.
The reduction can reach 20% for those earning between 10,000 and 20,000 euros, while those with a lower salary will not see their wages amputated.
The agreement provides for the reduction to be recovered in the following months if the competition resumes.
Most French professional clubs have already taken partial unemployment measures (ERTE), including PSG, which did so in early April, according to "Le Parisien".
The newspaper ensures that the capital club will lose around 300 million euros due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has already registered more than 80,000 infections and nearly 11,000 deaths in France.
