Best Save of Iker Casillas' Career

Iker Casillas, former international goalkeeper for Real Madrid, stated on Wednesday that the best save of his entire career was the one he made against Arjen Robben during the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which Spain won against the Netherlands. In this tournament, he also stopped a penalty from Paraguayan player Óscar Cardozo.

This was Casillas' choice when asked by a fan on the official Twitter account of the Champions League, where the Spanish goalkeeper answered other questions related to his career.

"I choose saves that are decisive in the end. Like the one in the final of the World Cup in South Africa. That one-on-one with Robben, not because of its spectacularity but because of the moment. And then the final in 2002 in Glasgow (of the Champions League that Real Madrid won against Bayer Leverkusen), those final minutes."

Casillas explained how the seconds before his action against Robben were, in the 62nd minute of the final, when the score was 0-0 between Spain and the Netherlands.

"At that moment, what I tried to do was anticipate what he could do. He had been my teammate at Real Madrid and I already knew more or less what his skills were. I tried to leave him a bit more space on his left side so that he would try to dribble past me there, but then he decided to shoot at the goal and I was able to quickly use my right foot to save it," he commented.

Finally, he chose between one of the two major titles he won with Spain: the 2008 UEFA European Championship in Switzerland and Austria or the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

"That's a good question. The difference between 2010 and 2008 is big. It is true that for us, there is a beginning, which is the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland, where we managed to advance through the penalty shootout against Italy (quarter-finals). From there, everything else came," he explained.

"If we hadn't made it past that quarter-final round of the European Championship, neither the World Cup nor the next European Championship would have happened. It was a decisive moment in Spanish football. Anything that involves winning a World Cup overshadows the rest. They are different moments but at the same time very important," he pointed out.
