The Eurocup that was going to be held next summer will be postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, following the meetings held this Tuesday by UEFA through videoconference with the league associations, clubs, and unions.
The competition was scheduled between June 12th and July 12th and was going to take place in twelve different venues to commemorate its 60th anniversary, with the opening match at the Olympic Stadium in Rome between Italy and Turkey and the semifinals and final at Wembley (London).
At the end of this month, the playoffs were going to be played to decide the last participating teams, including the one that would complete Spain's group, which would come from the matches Bosnia and Herzegovina/Northern Ireland - Slovakia/Republic of Ireland.
Sweden and Poland are the other rivals of the Spanish national team.
In the absence of an official communication from UEFA, the position of the postponement has been unanimously accepted by the clubs and leagues so that domestic competitions, interrupted in countries like Spain due to the outbreak of the disease, can be completed, initially for two matchdays.
UEFA must also specify with the parties how to proceed with the Champions League and Europa League, which have been completely suspended since that week due to the disease and pending their development, although the intention is to complete them.
To do this, it is not ruled out to modify its format, for the playoffs to be played in a single match, or to be played as a final four.
UEFA summoned today all the interested parties, including the unions, through a videoconference, to address the situation of the continental competitions, and some associations have already communicated the decision to postpone the Eurocup for one year. EFE
