Garay, who will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury, announced his positive test on Sunday, becoming the first positive case among players in the Spanish championship. The identity of the other affected Valencia players is not known.
"It is clear that I started 2020 on the wrong foot. I have tested positive for coronavirus, I am feeling fine and now I just have to follow the health authorities' instructions and be isolated for now", Garay said on Instagram, accompanying the text with a photo of the player.
The Argentinean was in the stands last Tuesday in Valencia, in the second leg match of the Champions League round of 16 lost by his team against Atalanta (4-3, aggregated score 8-4), played behind closed doors.
The first team players of Valencia had suspended collective training on Friday, once La Liga announced the suspension of the championship following the recommendations of health authorities due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The Spanish League was the last of the major championships without coronavirus cases among its players. In the Italian Serie A, almost a dozen players have tested positive. (D)
