Since the arrival of the Portuguese coach as a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham had won four of the last five games. They beat West Ham, Bournemouth, and then lost against Manchester United. But they recovered from this setback with victories against Burnley and Wolverhampton.

Mourinho doesn't do well in reunions, suffering his second defeat against another former team. First, it was against United. Now against Chelsea, whom he trained for four and a half years in two separate spells.

Willian was the man of the match. The Brazilian scored both goals for Chelsea at Tottenham Stadium. The first one was a great goal. In the twelfth minute, he received the ball from Croatian Mateo Kovacic on the left wing. He created space, found an angle, entered the box, and executed a great shot towards the opposite post of Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who couldn't do anything.

Tottenham tried to react but was not accurate, and their situation worsened just before halftime when Spanish player Marcos Alonso was fouled inside the box by Gazzaniga. Willian did not miss from the penalty spot and made it 0-2.

Mourinho brought on Danish player Christian Eriksen at halftime. As a substitute, he took Erik Dier's place to give the game a new dynamic. Nothing changed for the better. On the contrary, the home team was left with ten players as South Korean player Son Heung-min was sent off for kicking Antonio Rudiger while on the ground.

Tottenham's chances decreased even more. With fifteen minutes remaining, Tanguy Ndombele and Danny Rose replaced Lucas and Jan Vertonghen, respectively.

In the end, Frank Lampard's team, who had been struggling after defeats against Everton and Bournemouth, regained momentum in the competition and solidified their fourth position, in a Champions League qualifying spot, which Tottenham is now outside of.
