Meeting between Conmebol president and President of Chile amidst social unrest

The President of Conmebol, Paraguayan Alejandro Domínguez, and the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, are scheduled to hold a meeting in Santiago as part of the preparations for the 2019 Copa Libertadores final, which is currently taking place amidst the social unrest that is shaking the country.

Situation in Chile raises concerns over final

The situation in Chile, with several deaths and daily protests, has led to a wave of rumors about the celebration of the final, which will take place on November 23 at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, between Argentine River Plate and Brazilian Flamengo.

In this regard, Conmebol announced on Tuesday that Domínguez's meeting with "the President of the Republic of Chile and authorities is part of the preparations for the realization of the Copa Libertadores final, as it has been done so far."

Sources from Conmebol told Efe that the date of the meeting depends on Piñera's schedule, and that it could take place early next week.

Conmebol reaffirms decision to hold final in Chile

The statement comes five days after the South American Football Confederation reaffirmed its decision to hold the 2019 Copa Libertadores final in Chile, despite the social unrest in the country.

Chile is experiencing a wave of protests not seen in the country since the end of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship (1973-1990), demanding greater equality, which have resulted in about twenty deaths.

The instability led to Conmebol canceling the Futsal Copa America that was supposed to take place in the Chilean city of Los Ángeles between October 23 and 30.
