U de Chile achieves an important victory

The U de Chile obtained an important victory in its struggle to stay in the first division of Chilean football. The 'Romántico Viajero' defeated Deportes Iquique 2-1 in front of more than 43,646 spectators at the National Stadium, the highest figure so far in the tournament.

Marcos Riquelme (3') opened the scoring in the match corresponding to the 24th date of the Chilean tournament, but Matías Donoso (33') silenced the U's fans who filled the sports venue in Santiago.

At 55', defender Matías Blazquez from Deportes Iquique was sent off and, with that, the student team launched an all-out attack, managing to score the second goal at 84' through an own goal by Mauricio Zenteno.

With the victory, the U de Chile tied with 24 points with Deportes Iquique, but surpassed them in the standings by having a better goal difference.

The situation that U de Chile is going through is similar to what Universitario de Deportes experienced in the 2018 season, when they fought in the final part to avoid relegation.
