The Real Madrid did not start their match against Villarreal in the best way. In the 11th minute of the match, valid for the third round of the Liga Santander, the 'Yellow Submarine' took the lead at El Madrigal after forward Gerard Moreno sent the ball into the back of the net defended by Thibaut Courtois.
Shortly after a Sergio Ramos ball loss near his own goal, Villarreal reached the Real Madrid area with plenty of space. Thus, Cameroonian Karl Toko Ekembi had a clear opportunity to open the scoring, but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Courtois.
However, Courtois ended up leaving a rebound in that same play that Villarreal did not forgive. Gerard Moreno, after outpacing all the Real Madrid defenders, fired a strong shot towards the goal of the 'White House' and unleashed the joy of all the local fans at El Madrigal.
Although initially the referee was hesitating to disallow Gerard Moreno's goal, as it seemed that Ekembi was in an offside position before receiving a pass, it was eventually validated. In this way, the 27-year-old striker reached three goals for Villarreal so far this season.
