America couldn't prevail against Tigres in the penalty shootout and reached the grand final of the 2019 Leagues Cup.

The UANL Tigers achieved tonight the pass to the final of the first edition of the Leagues Cup 2019 after defeating the America Eagles by penalties (5-3) after concluding the regular time with a 2-2 tie in the semifinal match played at BBVA Stadium in Houston.

The match was in favor of the Eagles 2-1 when in the last play of injury time (90+5), a throw-in by Luis Rodríguez put the ball in the center of the America's area and defender Bruno Valdez, in his attempt to clear the ball, made a perfect shot towards his own goal to beat the goalkeeper Óscar Jiménez and put the miraculous 2-2 tie that took the match to penalties.

The Tigers did not waste the gift they had received and, from being eliminated, they emerged perfect in the penalty shootout to secure their place in the first final that they will play on September 18, in Las Vegas (Nevada), against the winner of the second semifinal match that will be played tonight in Carson California, between Cruz Azul and Los Angeles Galaxy.

Mexican player Jorge Torres Nilo, left back for Tigres, stated that tomorrow in the semifinals of the Leagues Cup, between Liga MX teams, they will fight to take the spot in the final from the America Eagles. "We know it's a do or die match," said the Mexican national team player in Monday's press conference after the practice directed by Brazilian coach Ricardo Ferretti in Zuazua, 35 kilometers from the capital of Nuevo León, in the north of the country.

Tigres will travel this Monday to Houston to face the azulcrema team coached by Mexican coach Miguel Herrera for a spot in the final of this tournament between teams from Mexican football and the Major League Soccer of the United States. Both teams will meet again on August 24 at the Universitario Stadium, home of the Tigers, to fulfill their match of the sixth round of the Apertura tournament.

"We practically see it as a playoff where you play midweek and then the weekend again. There is no benefit, they are two important tournaments, we focus on trying to win both," said Torres Nilo. The 31-year-old defender believes that it is not appropriate to focus only on the Mexican championship but also to have the responsibility of reaching the final of an international competition with the university team.

The former Atlas player is convinced of America's great individualities but, based on a thorough study of the opponent, they open the possibility of coming out on top with two wins this week.

Tigres advanced to the semifinals by defeating Real Salt Lake 1-0 with a goal from Chilean Eduardo Vargas on July 24 in the United States. Torres Nilo was crowned champion of the Campeones Cup last year against Toronto from MLS in another match between teams from the neighboring North American leagues.
