Antoine Griezmann arrived at Barcelona this season with the hope of being the new star and supporting the culés in winning the Champions League. Josep María Bartomeu's request from over two years ago was fulfilled for the sake of the culé fans. Once it became official, the big question was what jersey number will he wear? There was a lot of speculation about the number '7', but it couldn't happen because Philippe Coutinho was already wearing it. However, we present you the following case regarding the Frenchman.
Now that 'Cou' will not continue at Barcelona and has taken a new direction towards Bayern Munich, fans were hoping that the number that belonged to stars like David Villa or Pedro Rodríguez would be given to the 'Little Prince'. However, this will not be possible, at least for LaLiga Santander.
In the Spanish tournament, there is a recent regulation that prevents (unlike previous seasons) a football player from changing their jersey number halfway through the season if they have already played with a number. Therefore, Griezmann will have to settle with the number '17' that he wore in his league debut against Athletic Club at San Mamés.
There is only one exception to this rule, and that is if a reserve team player (with a number higher than 25) is registered with the first team and therefore must wear one of the first 25 numbers. This is not the case for Antoine.
The only chance that Griezmann has to wear the '7' is in the Champions League, something that seems unlikely due to the marketing difficulties that the club would have to do. Selling two jerseys with different numbers is not an option.
