Bobby Charlton, considered by FIFA as the greatest English footballer of all time, was born on this day in 1937 in Ashington, County Durham. Throughout his career, he only wore two jerseys: Manchester United and the England national team.

Manchester United

With the 'Red Devils', he scored 249 goals in 758 games. He won the League titles in 1957, 1965, and 1967. In addition, he won the FA Cup in 1963 and the European Cup in 1968.

Tragedy and Triumph

On February 6, 1958, he escaped death in the tragedy at Frankfurt airport, when the plane carrying Manchester United crashed on its return from Belgrade. All occupants died, except Bobby and goalkeeper Harry Gregg.

World Cup and Records

His greatest achievement was winning the 1966 World Cup, held in England. He remained the top scorer for his national team with 49 goals until September 8, when Wayne Rooney surpassed him by scoring his 50th goal.
