Spain are considering sacking their head coach Julen Lopetegui just one day before the World Cup begins.

The 51-year-old was surprisingly named as Real Madrid’s new manager on Tuesday afternoon.

And the president of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales has been angered by the timing of Lopetegui’s announcement.

Marca report that Rubiales feels ‘betrayed’ by Lopetegui and his anger has only increased since Madrid confirmed the appointment of their new manager.

After arriving in Krasnodar, Marca claim that Rubiales demanded Lopetegui to be sacked but other members of Spain’s Football federation have been trying to diffuse the situation.

‘This is not the time to talk, but we will make the decision that best suits the selection, we will do things responsibly,’ Rubiales said on Tuesday.

Lopetegui signed a contract extension with Spain less than a month ago which keeps him tied to the national team until after Euro 2020.

But the 51-year-old has since signed a three-year deal to replace Zinedine Zidane as Madrid’s manager.

They will then face Iran on June 20 before playing Morocco on June 25.
