Threats against Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius to be investigated by UK police
British police announced on Sunday that they will investigate death threats on social media against Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius, the day after Real Madrid's victory in the Champions League final (3-1), in which the goalkeeper was a negative protagonist.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper made two serious mistakes that cost his team two goals: the first (1-0) was a hand pass intercepted by Frenchman Karim Benzema, who kicked the ball into the net. In the second (3-1), a long shot from Gareth Bale went through Karius's hands and into the goal.
Karius, who broke down in tears after the match, apologized repeatedly to the press and the traveling Liverpool fans in Kiev, but it seems that didn't calm down some Liverpool fans.
Several of them launched serious threats against the goalkeeper through social media. Some even wished him to die of cancer or threatened his life by saying "I hope your whole family dies" or "I'm going to kill your wife".
These threats concern the British police a lot. "We take these messages very seriously and each one will be investigated," said a spokeswoman for Merseyside police to the Telegraph.
Karius apologized again on Sunday for his performance, but did not refer to the threats he received.
"I can't sleep. The images keep playing in my head over and over again. I'm deeply sorry and apologize to my teammates, all the fans, and the entire coaching staff," he tweeted.
"I know I let them down. I cost my team the match. If I could go back in time, I would. I'm very tough on myself right now, but that's the life of a goalkeeper. These goals clearly cost us the title," he continued.
Karius also took the opportunity to thank the "amazing fans" of Liverpool who "traveled to Kiev for their support, even after the match."
