The Lyon wins its fifth Women's Champions League title by defeating Wolfsburg

Lyon claimed its fifth Women's Champions League title by defeating Wolfsburg 4-1 in extra time on Thursday in Kiev, following a goalless draw in regular time.

The French team, now the team with the most titles, surpassing the four of FFC Frankfurt, saw Wolfsburg take the lead in overtime through Pernille Harder (93).

Three minutes later, Wolfsburg was reduced to ten players after Alexandra Popp received her second yellow card (96).

After the expulsion, Lyon turned the match around in just seven minutes with goals from Amandine Henry (98), Eugenie Le Sommer (99), and Ada Hergerberg (103).

With the result settled, Camille Abily, who had just entered the game to honor her retirement this season, closed the scoring (116).

Abily, who holds the record for most matches (81) and most goals (43) in the Women's Champions League, said goodbye in the best way at the age of 33, with her fifth title with Lyon.

The match brought together the two best teams of the decade at the Valeryi Lobanovskyi Stadium, where Dynamo Kiev plays, in front of 14,000 spectators.

Lyon, which had won four Champions League titles (2011, 2012, 2016, and 2017), faced off against Wolfsburg, the champions in 2013 and 2014.

For Olympique Lyonnais, it was their seventh final, having also played the decisive match in 2010 and 2013.

It was the third final between the two teams, as Lyon had beaten Wolfsburg on penalties in 2016, but the German team had prevailed in 2013 with a 1-0 victory.

Lyon, who was the clear dominator of the match with 26 shots on target compared to Wolfsburg's 6, showed the German team that they are undoubtedly the best European team.
