Unai Emery to leave PSG at the end of the season

Spanish coach Unai Emery announced today that he will stop managing Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) when his contract expires in June, explaining that it is "the best for everyone".

"I have informed the players that, after meeting with the president and Antero (sports director), we have decided that I will not continue next season," he said at a press conference.

Emery, 46, has been coaching PSG since June 2016 and, although he has won most of the domestic titles -all except the league in 2017-, he has failed in the Champions League, not going beyond the round of 16, first eliminated by Barcelona (2017) and then by Real Madrid (2018).

"I thank the players, the president, Antero, the fans," added the Basque coach, who recalled his first six months and the elimination against Barça in March 2017, when PSG lost 6-1 in the second leg after winning 4-0 in the first leg, as the toughest moments of his two years.

"That tie was difficult, after our great first leg. Then we lost there, with that refereeing," he reminisced. Emery also spoke about Neymar, his pupil at PSG, and acknowledged that the Brazilian's first year "was not easy".

"Changes are never easy," the coach said referring to his move from Barcelona to PSG for €222 million, the most expensive transfer in football history. "I tell Neymar to continue living with the naturalness with which he lives," he appreciated.
