Chivas wins Liga de Campeones de la Concacaf
After Chivas was crowned in the Concacaf Champions League, the top club competition in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, defeating Toronto FC 4-2 on penalties after a 1-2 loss in the second leg, which tied the aggregate score at 3-3, at Estadio Akron, they ended their international title drought.
In the first leg, led by Matías Almeyda, Chivas took a 2-1 advantage with goals from Rodolfo Pizarro and Alan Pulido, while the Canadians responded through Jonathan Osorio.
In the second leg, Orbelín Pineda scored for the Mexicans, while Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco forced the sudden death. Oswaldo Alanís, Jesús Godínez, Alan Pulido, and Ángel Zaldívar were accurate from the penalty spot, while the MLS team struggled, as Giovinco and Marco Delgado scored, but Jonathan Osorio and captain Michael Bradley missed.
The Rojiblanco team ended a 56-year drought by winning another international title, as the last time they were crowned in a competition of this kind was precisely the Champions League in 1962, when they defeated Comunicaciones from Guatemala.
Following this result, Chivas will represent the region in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates from December 12 to 22, 2018.
It is worth noting that the last time the team from Guadalajara came close to winning a competition of this kind was in the 2010 Copa Libertadores, under the management of José Luis Real, where they finished runners-up after losing to Brazil's Internacional de Porto Alegre.
On the other hand, the team led by the Argentine strategist will seek to end the Clausura 2018 of Liga MX on a positive note, as they currently sit in second-to-last place with only 15 points, and they will face León at Estadio Akron.
