Greek government lifts suspension on football league
The Greek government has lifted the suspension on the country's football league, saying it has received a promise from clubs to reform rules aimed at combating violence.
League organizers say matches will resume on Saturday, with additional midweek games planned to make up for the two-week suspension.
The government announced the decision on Tuesday following talks with Greek clubs and a delegation from FIFA, which visited Athens this month and had threatened to expel the country from international competitions.
The suspension was ordered after the owner of PAOK club, Ivan Savvidis, confronted a referee on the pitch with a gun in its holster. PAOK and Savvidis face disciplinary sanctions and court appearances as a result of the incident.
