Borussia Dortmund Looks to Strengthen Midfield for Next Season
Already out of the Champions League and with no chance of competing for the Bundesliga title (they are a staggering 19 points behind the leaders), Borussia Dortmund is starting to long for the end of a season that has also brought the departure of their main offensive reference, Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Although it is true that the Germans can still fight for the Europa League, the truth is that their board has already started working with an eye on the upcoming season, which should restore competitiveness to a team that not long ago amazed Europe with their vertical and effective play.
According to Bild newspaper, one of the priorities that the German team has set is to improve the performance of their midfield by signing a midfielder who combines defensive ability and ball control. In this regard, the newspaper already mentions four candidates: Brazilian Fabinho (AS Monaco), German Emre Can (Liverpool), Belgian Leander Dendoncker (Anderlecht), and Spanish Asier Illarramendi (Real Sociedad).
In the case of the latter, his signing would clearly involve paying the €40 million release clause, as Real Sociedad has no intention of letting him go. Furthermore, after a resounding failure during his time as a player for Real Madrid, it remains to be seen if Illarramendi would consider playing far from Anoeta again.
