The team led by Christopher Cuéllar started dominating the match, as they had more dangerous chances in the opposing area; however, it wasn't until the 32nd minute that the Mexicans took the lead, after Dayana Cázares received a great cross and managed to evade the American defense, sending the ball to the back of the net.
The first half ended with the advantage for Tri Femenil, who had several opportunities to increase their lead but couldn't convert them.
In the second half, the Americans put more pressure on the Mexican team, resulting in an immediate equalizer in the 48th minute by Tierna Davidson.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing extra time, where neither team could do any damage.
In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Emily Alvarado stopped two penalties, which were crucial for the Tri to defeat United States 4-2.
