The Dream of the President of the Mexican Football Federation, Decio de María, Moves Forward

The dream of the President of the Mexican Football Federation, Decio de María, to be able to experience a World Cup in his native Mexico City took a new step towards becoming a reality, as the Head of Government, Miguel Ángel Mancera, handed over the documentation to the FMF that will be delivered by Yon de Luisa to FIFA in order to be an official host of the 2026 World Cup.

"It has not been an easy task. The documents were a demanding job, a compendium of over 50,000 pages of information signed with specific commitments from each of the host cities," said Mancera at the event held in the capital.

For Decio de María, it was important to highlight that, out of the 32 potential cities to host this event between Mexico, the United States, and Canada, the capital of the country was the first to submit the documentation.

"The City of Mexico takes a step forward and sets an example for the other cities." In addition, for both the President of the Mexican Football Federation and the Head of Government, the union of these three countries is a clear example that they can work together on any topic that is put on the table.

"This effort to have a candidacy with three countries has great significance because sports have the virtue of bringing three nations together at the table and achieving a common goal and telling the world why we can and we want to," said De María.

"This also demonstrates that Mexico, the United States, and Canada can work together. I believe it sends an important message for all these negotiations that are taking place in other areas," replied Mancera Espinosa.

ON TIME AND FOUR MONTHS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

On January 19, four months after the earthquake that shook the capital of the country and that, at the time, cast doubt on the city's candidacy to be a host of the 2026 World Cup; however, Mancera highlighted that by chance, the documentation was submitted earlier than anyone else on this date, fulfilling the requirements that FIFA demands to continue with the selection process.

"When this earthquake occurred and we communicated with Decio, he said 'oh no, I hope this doesn't complicate things' and now the city is the first to submit the documents. Exactly four months after the earthquake, we meet the requirements because the Federation told us that we had to get to work and that's what we did," said Mancera.

Now, we just have to wait for Yon de Luisa to take this package of information to Zurich, to FIFA's headquarters, on March 16, so that on June 13, the official announcement of the host for the 2026 World Cup will be made.
