New coach for Bosnia national team

Croatian midfielder Robert Prosinecki was named as the new coach of Bosnia on Thursday, replacing Mehmed Bazdarevic, who failed to qualify Bosnia for the 2018 World Cup.

The former Yugoslavian and Real Madrid star, 48, was "unanimously" chosen by the Executive Committee of the Bosnian Federation, said Vice President Milorad Sofrenic in a press conference.

The other candidate was Bosnian Amar Osim, son of another Balkan football legend, Ivica Osim.

Prosinecki previously served as assistant coach for Croatia (2006-2010) and coach for Azerbaijan (2014-2016), and also managed Red Star Belgrade (2010-2012), the club with which he won the European Cup - now known as the Champions League - as a player in 1991.

The former player of Real Madrid and Barcelona will make his debut in friendly matches at the end of January against the United States and Mexico.

"I am happy to be able to coach such a high-quality national team. I know Bosnia very well, it has players of great quality and potential," Prosinecki said to N1 television in Zagreb.

"It is clear that the objective is to participate in a major competition. The next one is the Euro (2020). I believe we will achieve good results and that we can qualify," he added.
