Virgil van Dijk becomes the most expensive defender in football history
Virgil van Dijk became just a few hours ago the most expensive defender in the history of football. The reason is none other than the €84M paid by Liverpool to close his signing from Southampton. Tremendously courted since last summer, the Dutch player had also attracted the interest of other top teams, which is why his price shot up.
Manchester City's interest
Among those who had shown the most interest in the player was Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Given the lack of confidence of the coach in some players like Eliaquim Mangala, as well as the physical problems of other important players like Vincent Kompany or John Stones, it has caused the current Premier League leader to go all out for the Dutch player.
New targets for Manchester City
Now, once this possibility has vanished, the names of two familiar faces come into play. This is precisely what we can read in The Telegraph, an English newspaper which states that the citizen team has decided to once again focus on both Íñigo Martínez (Real Sociedad) and Jonny Evans (West Bromwich Albion).
Previous interest
While the first one was on FC Barcelona's radar last summer but his signing was not ultimately finalized, the second one was precisely one of the recurring names on the list of potential signings for Manchester City, which even offered €21M for his incorporation. Will they achieve their goal now?
