Spanish Football Federation Names Fernando Hierro as Sports Director

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) officially announced on Thursday the appointment of Fernando Hierro as sports director of the institution presided over by Juan Luis Larrea.

This decision was made by the board of directors, who met today at the Sports City of Las Rozas. Hierro returns to a position he already held between 2007 and 2011, coinciding with the victories of the Spanish national team in the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland, and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Hierro spent the majority of his sporting career at Real Madrid, where he played over 600 matches and won five La Liga titles, five Spanish Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, three Champions Leagues, and two Intercontinental Cups.

Prior to that, he played for Valladolid and ended his career at English club Bolton Wanderers after a season at Al-Rayyan in Qatar.

With Spain, he played 89 international matches, scoring 29 goals. He participated in the 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002 World Cups, as well as the 1996 and 2000 European Championships.

He has also served as general manager of Malaga and made his coaching debut as an assistant to Italian Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

In 2016, Oviedo announced his appointment as head coach of the first team, a position he held until June 13, 2017, when the Asturian club did not renew his contract for another season after finishing the championship in eighth place.
