The Guangzhou Evergrande, team coached by Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, became the champion of the Chinese league for the seventh consecutive time with two games left in the championship.
The Cantonese team won the title after defeating Guizhou Hengfeng Zhicheng 5-1 on Sunday, giving them a nine-point advantage over second place team Shanghai SPIG, who lost 1-2 to Guangzhou R&F.
Guangzhou extends its reign in Asian football for another year and it seems that next season it will be without Scolari on the bench, as everything points to him leaving the club when his contract ends on November 30th, according to local media.
Scolari joined the Chinese team in mid-2015 after the dismissal of Italian Fabio Cannavaro and has not only won three leagues with the club, but also an Asian Champions League in late 2015.
The other championships won by Evergrande were with Italian Marcello Lippi as coach, and the first of their hegemonic era with South Korean Lee Jang-soo.
Guangzhou Evergrande, backed by strong economic investment since the beginning of this decade, has become the dominant team in Chinese football, even though they never stood out in national football before and spent much of their history in lower divisions.
