Protest by Brazilian Women's National Soccer Team
Today, five players from the Brazilian women's national soccer team announced their resignation from the national team in protest over the dismissal of coach Emily Lima at the end of September due to poor results.
The defenders Andreia Rosa and Rosana, midfielders Fran and Maurine, and forward Cristiane publicly announced their resignation from playing for the national team in disagreement with Lima's dismissal.
Maurine, a 31-year-old player from Santos, was the latest to announce her departure from the national team. She has released a video on social media to communicate her decision.
In an interview with Globoesporte, the Brazilian footballer expressed her frustration with the constant changes in the coaching staff, which hinder continuity in the team's work.
"I'm tired because there are always changes in the middle of the road, and we never manage to continue the work. I have nothing against anyone's work, but everyone has their time to work, and everyone had it except for Emily," criticized Maurine.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced on September 22 the dismissal of Emily Lima, just 10 months into her tenure, citing poor results, and appointed Vadao as her replacement. Vadao had previously left the position after the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games last year.
Upon learning of the coach's departure, almost all of the team's players (24 out of 26 called up) signed a letter expressing their dissatisfaction with the decision.
In addition to Maurine, the other four resigning players also expressed harsh criticism of the CBF.
"They simply removed this (coaching) staff in a very short time, and all the players liked it. I don't understand. All the other staffs that came before had a long time of work, a long cycle, and this one didn't. Just because it was a woman?" said the 32-year-old forward Cristiane, one of the team's stars.
Andreia Rosa released a video to "take a stand against this lack of respect and equality, this change of values."
"We are not giving up on women's soccer, but we are resigning from our dreams for a better future for future generations," she said.
The Brazilian women's national team will participate in a friendly tournament in China at the end of this month, where they will face the local team, North Korea, and Mexico. This tournament will serve as preparation for the Copa America in April next year.
