Scouts from Manchester United travelled to Italy last Tuesday to watch the Champions League clash between AS Roma and Atlético Madrid. Their goal was to keep an eye on two players who are highly favored by the first team's coach, Portuguese manager José Mourinho.
According to The Sun, the English spies had their sights set on both Saúl Ñíguez and Radja Nainggolan, two midfielders whom the Setúbal-born manager considers ideal to fill the gap that will be left in the midfield line by English player Michael Carrick, whose contract expires next summer.
However, the newspaper warns that signing any of these players will be difficult, as their respective clubs have no intention of letting them go. In fact, it is worth mentioning that the Atletico Madrid player recently renewed his contract with the club (until the distant year 2026) and has a release clause of no less than €100M.
Although in today's football any amount seems affordable, the truth is that if Manchester United decides to take action, they will also have to work hard to convince the committed player. "I am very happy because at Atleti we are a family and there is no better place for me to be. I will work as hard as ever to repay the trust the club has placed in me on the field," he said after signing the aforementioned contract.
