Syria ties 2-2 with Iran and qualifies for the World Cup
The Syrian national team managed to tie 2-2 against Iran at the last minute with a heroic goal from Omar Al Soma and will play the playoff to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. The team had to play their home matches in Malaysia due to the war that has engulfed the country for the past six years.
Syria, third in group A of the Asian zone, will find out their opponent in the playoffs on Tuesday, which will be the third place team from group B. Australia and Saudi Arabia are competing for that spot.
The winner of the matchup, which will take place in October, will face the fourth place team from Concacaf in a two-legged playoff.
A total of seven of the 32 participants in the upcoming World Cup have already qualified: Russia, the host country, Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, and the three Asian nations of South Korea, Iran, and Japan.
China, who defeated Qatar (2-1) on Tuesday, has been eliminated.
