Neymar becomes an ambassador for Handicap International
Neymar, the Brazilian star recently transferred from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for a record of 222 million euros, became a new ambassador for Handicap International on Tuesday, as announced by the NGO in Geneva, in the presence of the player in a ceremony at the Palace of Nations, headquarters of the UN in the Swiss city.
Neymar had previously kicked the ball up on the "Broken Chair," an immense sculpture located in front of the Palace of Nations that depicts a chair with an amputated leg. This work, by Swiss artist Daniel Berset, was done 20 years ago at the request of Handicap International to demand the prohibition of landmines.
"From the top of this iconic sculpture in Geneva, Neymar Jr has directed a message to the nations of the world, urging them to include more and more disabled people in society," the NGO said in a statement.
"Through this collaboration, Neymar Jr puts his immense popularity at the service of a cause: the most vulnerable people in the world, disabled people in poor countries, victims of conflicts and natural disasters," emphasized Handicap International.
According to the NGO, the football player has been interested in the issue of children suffering from amputations for some time.
"He wanted to support actions on this topic on a global scale and discovered the work of Handicap International in early 2016. He showed his desire to visit the association's projects on the ground, which is not yet possible due to scheduling reasons," the NGO explained.
On Sunday, the 25-year-old Brazilian player scored a goal and provided an assist in his great debut with PSG in the French league (3-0 in Guingamp).
