Philipp Lahm chosen as Germany's Footballer of the Year

Philipp Lahm, who retired from football at the end of the Bundesliga season with Bayern Munich, has been voted Germany's Footballer of the Year by the sports press, ahead of Toni Kroos.

The specialized magazine Kicker released today the results of the traditional poll conducted by the members of the German Federation of Sports Journalists, which crowned for the first time Philipp Lahm, former captain of the German national team and Bayern Munich, who had finished second in 2004 and third in 2006.

Philipp Lahm, who retired with eight league titles, a Champions League trophy (in 2013), and a World Cup championship (2014), was chosen with 242 votes out of a total of 885 cast votes, 50 more than Kroos received.

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished in third place with 120 votes.

Philipp Lahm follows in the footsteps of his former teammate Jerome Boateng, who was named the country's best player last year.
