Manuel Neuer named new captain of Bayern Munich
The Bayern Munich board chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, announced during the club's Asian tour that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will succeed Philipp Lahm as team captain.
However, Neuer will not be able to wear the captain's armband during the Asian tour as he stayed in Munich to recover from a foot injury he sustained at the end of last season.
During the Telekom Cup, a preseason tournament that Bayern won, Thomas Müller took on the captaincy.
Neuer will be the fourth goalkeeper to serve as captain for Bayern Munich, following Oliver Kahn, Raymond Aumann, and Sepp Maier.
The goalkeeper joined Bayern from Schalke 04 in 2011. Since then, he has won the Bundesliga five times and the Champions League once. He is an undisputed starter for both Bayern and the German national team.
In the national team, Neuer has also been captain since 2016.
