The United States selector, Bruce Arena, admits that the team did not have the best performance in the group stage of the Gold Cup in its fourteenth edition and, although they advanced to the Quarterfinals as first, confirmed the arrival of six new players.

It is about four regular starters like goalkeeper Tim Howard, midfielder Michael Bradley and forwards Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore.

In addition, midfielder Darlington Nagbe, from the Timbers of Portland of the United States Professional Soccer League (MLS), and Mexican-American goalkeeper Jesse González, called for the first time after being authorized by FIFA to play for the Stars and Stripes, were also called up.

González, 22 years old, who plays for FC Dallas also from the MLS, decided to play for the United States less than a month ago, but when Arena announced the list of 23 players for the Gold Cup, he had not yet received FIFA's approval.

These six call-ups will fill the vacancies left by Brad Guzan, Sean Johnson, Alejandro Bedoya, Cristian Roldan, Kelyn Rowe, and Domimic Dwyer.

The surprise among the absences is Colombian-born midfielder Alejandro Bedoya, the best player for the US in the match against Nicaragua on the closing day of Group B, which the North American team won 3-0.

Bedoya will join his family as his wife is about to give birth for the second time.

"We have added some experienced players to the squad who will help us be a better team," Arena said in a statement on Sunday.

"The players leaving the team all made a great impression and I am optimistic about their future with the national team program."

Dempsey, with 56 goals, is just one away from tying the all-time leader of the national team, former forward Landon Donovan.

Both he and Bradley, Howard, and Altidore are regular starters for the national team, while Nagbe has played the first seven matches under Arena's guidance, who replaced German Jürgen Klinsmann last November to begin a second spell in charge.

The United States has a record of 32-4-1 during the group stage of the Gold Cup and is undefeated (6-5-0) since Arena took over.
