The French defender Jéremy Mathieu has signed for two seasons with Sporting in Portugal, until June 2019, the Lisbon team announced on Friday in a statement.
"Sporting in Portugal has reached an agreement with Jéremy Mathieu for the next two seasons," the club said. The player's release clause, who can play both as a center-back and a left-back, has been set at 60 million euros.
The 33-year-old Frenchman joined Sporting - where he had a short trial period - after giving up the final year of his contract with Barcelona.
Mathieu signed for Barça in 2014 from Valencia for around 20 million euros. His first season as a blaugrana could not have been better: the team won the league, the cup, and the Champions League, and the center-back scored in the important victory over Real Madrid (2-1), in the return of the domestic championship. However, in his last season, the Frenchman could only play 16 games across all competitions due to injuries.
