The Head of FIFA Referees Acknowledges VAR Challenges in the Confederations Cup
The head of FIFA referees, Massimo Busacca, admitted that the tests with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) have not been entirely successful in the Confederations Cup.
"There are many things that need to be improved," said Busacca, including better and faster communication to avoid slow reviews that have caused confusion among players, coaches, and fans.
However, the former World Cup referee said he remains positive about the new system, which is being tested for use in next year's World Cup in Russia.
Busacca indicated that the most important thing is that the technology has helped referees avoid serious mistakes in 12 matches so far.
FIFA stated that VAR has helped reverse six "decisions that would have altered the outcome of matches." The initial judgments of referees in 29 other "important situations" were confirmed after being reviewed with the use of video technology.
Busacca said that FIFA has to convince other federations to implement VAR in their national competitions.
